Mortal Kombat II Cast Bring Exclusive Fan Event to Sydney Ahead of Release
Stars descended upon Sydney for explosive premiere of Mortal Kombat II, led by Karl Urban and director Simon McQuoid.
Sydney played host to a major cinematic event Monday night as Mortal Kombat II held an exclusive Fan Event and screening at IMAX Sydney, celebrating the highly anticipated sequel to the profitable 2021 film, inspired by the video game franchise that became a global phenomenon the 1990s.

The red carpet welcomed an impressive lineup of international and local talent, led by Karl Urban, who takes on the iconic role of Johnny Cage, alongside co-stars Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Chin Han, CJ Bloomfield, Ana Thu Nguyen and Desmond Chiam.

They were joined by returning director Simon McQuoid, who once again helms the franchise following the success of the original movie, which was filmed for New Line and Warner Bros. in South Australia.

Held at the iconic IMAX Sydney in Darling Harbour, Mortal Kombat II features over 40 minutes of IMAX footage in 1.90:1 expanded aspect ratio as part of the Filmed for IMAX program. Much to director Simon McQuoid‘s delight, Mortal Kombat II was entirely shot on the Gold Coast, with visual effects completed in Sydney.

The premiere event brought together the filmmakers and cast with invited guests and passionate fans to celebrate the next chapter in the high-octane franchise, with the ensemble taking time to greet audiences before introducing the film.

Mortal Kombat II raises the stakes significantly, bringing fan-favourite characters into a full-scale tournament as Earthrealm faces its greatest threat yet in the form of Shao Kahn.

The sequel expands on the mythology and spectacle that made its predecessor a global success, while introducing one of the franchise’s most beloved figures in Johnny Cage.

Written by Jeremy Slater, the film is based on the iconic video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The production team includes Australian producer James Wan, with a score by Benjamin Wallfisch, as well as a return to the beloved music from original 1995 film.

Following the Sydney fan event, the film continues its Australian tour with a Gold Coast preview before opening nationwide.
Mortal Kombat II lands in cinemas on May 7, 2026.
